Back in the bathroom, I took the canned product, sprayed a dollop of the white minoxidil foam onto my hand and ran it along my scalp. A dull, harsh headache began to form, and I got into bed and tried to fall asleep. The next morning, it felt like my brain had smoked a pack of cigarettes. Was this a side effect?
Did I put too much on? Immediately, I suspended usage. Time passed, and so did more hair. I did research on Rogaine, and learned some interesting facts. Even stranger was the way the active ingredient, minoxidil, was discovered: Initially, it was tested on mice to help with hypertension, but then it was uncovered that one of the random side effects of the chemical was hair growth.
Rogaine can lead to more serious side effects, but this is rare. Talk with your doctor right away if you experience any of the following:. When you first start using Rogaine, you might notice an increase in hair shedding for the first couple of weeks as your hair follicles push old hair out to make room for new growth.
Rogaine does work to some extent, as evidenced by clinical studies. For those it does benefit, Rogaine will not help recover all hair lost. Yes, Rogaine is FDA-approved. But people who are pregnant or breastfeeding are not recommended to use it. You can get Rogaine at your local pharmacy or online at their site. You can also purchase the generic form, minoxidil, through online services like Roman , Hims , and Keeps. While Rogaine has been proven to be effective in regrowing hair, there is a catch.
Rogaine only works in people with a hereditary form of hair loss at the top and back of the scalp. You also have to use it continuously if you want to maintain your results.
To make it easier, you can subscribe to a Rogaine delivery program through the product website. Less expensive generics are also available.
Given the fact that this side effect is uncommon and is reversible, it may make sense to recommend this product to women if it can improve results. Needless to say, many doctors already do recommend Rogaine foam to their female hair-loss patients. In order to minimise the chances of negative side effects, women should apply Rogaine foam at least 30 minutes after washing their hair, in order to avoid overabsorption, and should interrupt the treatment if an allergic reaction occurs.
Most have an immune basis, meaning that some sort of inflammation is generally present underneath the scalp. Treatment with minoxidil alone as a sole treatment is never appropriate for patients with "active" scarring alopecia. Minxodil however can be a good add on treatment adjuvant treatment to cheer on hairs that are trying hard to push their way through scar tissue in the scalp.
I often recommend patients who decided to start minoxidil and who show some kind of benefit for scarring alopecias continue to use long term.
Scar tissue is permanent and it is helpful if many cases to have minoxidil on board to cheer the hair growth along. In summary, the decision to use minoxidil forever in scarring alopecias is taken on a case by case basis. For many patients long term use is advised if there is evidence it is actually helping.
