Marking a different spin on the franchise, Ace Attorney Investigations: Miles Edgeworth does away with the standard investigation and courtroom trials. Instead, players now experience more interaction when investigating as they can move the protagonist around to search for evidence, meet suspects, and talk to witnesses.
These are similar to the cross-examination moments from previous games. As for the protagonist, players take control of Miles Edgeworth, who is a prosecutor. There are five episodes total, and the game starts a month after the fourth game in the franchise.
The sixth entry in the franchise is officially known as Gyakuten Kenji 2 , but unofficially referred to by Ace Attorney Investigations 2. The same gameplay returns as well as the investigation and argument modes. However, there is a new mechanic: Logic Chess. During interrogation with an unwilling character, the screen turns into a chessboard, indicating Miles and the other character are in a mental chess match.
With the Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney Trilogy , you can enjoy the first three games in the franchise:. Not only are the classic games available with a fresh update, but this also comes with a cool language patch. You can play the game not just in English and Japanese, but also in Korean, simplified and traditional Chinese, French, and German.
A nice change of pace, Professor Layton vs. Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney is a fun visual novel adventure puzzle game created by the developers of both games. The story centers around the characters from both games as they work to solve the Labyrinthia mystery.
There are 12 chapters, and the game divides rather fairly with having Professor Layton and assistants explore the witch trials and Phoenix Wright and assistants undergo investigation styles usually found in the Professor Layton game. A new feature players of Ace Attorney will notice is that there are fully-voiced cutscenes in anime style. This game features a bit of a darker theme in which lawyers found on both sides of the court have used tactics both illegal and unethical to win.
There are five episodes as well as downloadable content. Sometimes you may even cross-examine multiple witnesses all at the same time.
Additionally, this game comes with some immersive 3D character models and backgrounds with improved animations. There is something new, however. This pops up while investigating with Herlock Sholmes in which Sholmes makes snap deductions and theories about a witness. The player has to then point out any contradictions. This game uses the 3D navigation to go through environments at various angles.
These will show a victim in the moment they had before their death, and players must study it carefully to find any contradictions to use for their case.
There are five full-length episodes to play through with this game. Many of the same elements return that were in the previous game. However, this one does mark a return of the fingerprint dusting game mechanic.
An interesting fact about this game is that the episode naming scheme pays homage to the titles of the original Sherlock Holmes short story compilations. Besides including the games, this collection comes with more gameplay features as well as some additional content.
It introduces two modes: Autoplay Mode and Story Mode. If you go in Autoplay Mode, then the text will advance automatically without you having to press it.
Meanwhile, with Story Mode, the decision-making mechanic and the puzzle-solving mechanic are skipped. Your email address will not be published.
And you should play Apollo Justice before Spirit of Justice, if possible. Apollo Justice is now available from the 3DS eShop, making this easier. Play them all! Including the spin-offs! Meanwhile, after all this time, Dai Gyakuten Saiban and its sequel are finally being localized in a new collection called The Great Ace Attorney Chronicles!
It will be released on July So, can you start with The Great Ace Attorney? As far as we know, yes. There are seven games in the main series. Here are all the Professor Layton games in release date order:. The first six games are divided into the original trilogy and the prequel trilogy. Therefore, the chronological order is:. However, it IS enjoyable. An additional spin-off, called Layton 7, was announced for iOS and Android, but little has been revealed about it.
Once again, my general recommendation is that if you plan to play them all, you should play the games in the order they were released. On the other hand, if you want to only play the 3DS games, you should be able to start with Miracle Mask easily enough, although the prequel trilogy has a stronger overarching plot.
Crossovers often appeal to both audiences, so while fans of both series are interested in Professor Layton vs. Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney , a lot of people looking at it are either newcomers to both series, or have played one but not the other.
Not really. Its position in the timeline is vague. Most fans place it after Trials and Tribulations in the Ace Attorney timeline, and between Diabolical Box and Unwound Future in the Professor Layton timeline, but since that puts it simultaneously in the year and in the steampunk-esque vague s no one knows when Professor Layton is actually set , does it even matter?
In fact, this is a great way to give Professor Layton fans a taste of Ace Attorney gameplay and vice versa. Most importantly, Professor Layton vs. Phoenix Wright has no spoilers for either series. So no matter what your knowledge of the series is, if you want to play Professor Layton vs.
Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney , go for it! Remember, if you plan to watch the movie, it falls between Last Specter and Miracle Mask. No, you see the main plot of hte movie is a flashback to an adventure that occured between Last Spectre and Miracle Mask and the rest is set somwhere between Curious village and Lost Future.
Trust me, the Professor Layton series is something you should play. You might be surprised at how good the older games are in comparison to the 3ds games. Something to think about that might help. I should update this article to reflect that. Thanks for reminding me! There are major spoilers. It completely ruined the experience to me. Do play chronologically please! I have the prequel trilogy for Professor Layton series, I recommend starting the series with Last Specter, since it is the beginning of the whole story, then skip to whatever one they want to play they may get confused where Remi went This crossover also did make me a AA fan.
Looking forward to them! That would make it easier for people to get into the series. The crossover did the reverse for me. I thought the ending was great. I was also irritated by how they handled Barnham. I could have more easily forgiven the ending if he had a role to play in the final case. I guess this was also the problem for translation nuances.
I think the others also the same not really sure about the plot holes, I should research it in Japanese. As for the plot holes… it might just be the Layton-style twist ending taken to an extreme. Of the Professor Layton games, my least favorite is the one where I see similar plot holes caused my the twist. I just want a sequel to the mystery room. Really enjoyable casual gameplay…and such an interesting hook ending, just begging for another go round! I agree, although I think the gameplay could be improved somewhat.
If you can play the DS versions, physical copies of them should still be easy to buy online. Only the intro is set during that time, however. The main events of Eternal Diva are set in between Last Specter and Miracle Mask the role of Descole and references to the movie later in the prequel trilogy make this clear.
